GarciaLive Volume Ten documents the Jerry Garcia Band’s May 20th, 1990 performance at the Hilo Civic Auditorium in Hawaii. In this relaxed setting complete with leis on stage, it’s no wonder that the music from this show shines so brightly – both in Garcia’s strong vocals and guitar playing but also the joie de vivre setlist spanning some of Jerry’s favorite corners of popular music – Dylan, Motown, Reggae, and Rock & Roll. Spurred on by the ever steady rhythm section of Dave Kemper and John Kahn, the Garcia Band this night seemed to pull out all the stops complete with the celestial sounds of Melvin Seals’ organ and the background vocals of Gloria Jones and Jacklyn LaBranch.
The sum of these parts that defined the 1990s Garcia Band sound would make for a magical Sunday night that first kicked off with the Holland-Dozier-Holland favorite "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" followed by an idyllic “They Love Each Other.” Sprinkled in throughout the night are five Dylan covers including powerfully delivered vocals on versions of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” “Forever Young" and a positively soaring “Tangled Up In Blue” as the encore. Along the way, covers like “Stop That Train,” “Waiting For A Miracle” and "Evangeline" ably accent originals like “Deal” and “Run For The Roses.”

GregMarch 19, 2018Not knowing Jerry personally am going to be guessing here. Jerry sounds so relaxed and totally enjoying playing music. Hard to explain, but Jerry seems so happy. The show radiates with fun and good energy for all on both sides of the stage. Highly recommend.

CubMarch 7, 2018Sometimes I will love a purchase just because of one song or track. With Volume 10 there are 18 reasons to buy Two (one for your best friend). Each track Jerry adds a little riff, cord or lyric that I've never heard included before this show, or on the live tour's after it. My favorite song is the unique way Jerry plays "The Way You Do The Things You Do". It's a totally different upbeat tempo than the Motown original. If they used this track as one of the samplers it would be best seller worthy of a Grammy or Bammy. And of course one of 2 favorite Dylan covers "Forever Young" also played and sung in a one time unique style. The audio quality of course is pristine. Liner notes sez: original recordings produced by Jerry, recorded by John Cutler. The booklet also has some great color pics of the venue. An intimate high school-size gym. Reminds me of the JGB tours in the early 80's. Rocky Glen Amusement Park, Caldwell College N.J. (w/ nuns who let us use the facilities). I hope this disc is available for a long time so everyone can hear what the big attraction was all about back then.
