GarciaLive Volume 13 puts a spotlight on the Jerry Garcia Band’s legendary September ’89 run highlighting the September 16th show at Poplar Creek Music Theatre located in the suburbs of Chicago. Alongside the Jerry Garcia Band – John Kahn, David Kemper, Melvin Seals, Gloria Jones, and Jacklyn LaBranch – there is one BIG addition on saxophone… the Big Man, Clarence Clemons (Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band). While the setlist is fairly standard for the era, Clemons helps the band find new heights on old staples like The Band's “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence" and a pair of Garcia/Hunter originals, “Cats Under The Stars” and “They Love Each Other.” One relative rarity of note is a positively blistering take on The Rolling Stones’ romp “Let’s Spend The Night Together,” dusted off earlier in the year after having been absent since ’76, which closes set one spectacularly. Top to bottom, this one is filled with magic.

This entire show is off the hook. But the "Dear Prudence">"Let's Spend the Night Together" is outrageous. Yeah his voice is a little crackly, but the energy and stamina Jerry was playing with during these years is extraordinary...a must have imo...

This combo is great! The Big Man adds a great oomph to this show. I’m wondering if any of the shows from The Calderone Concert Hall in Hempstead, NY from the mid to late 70s I remember one particular show with Maria Mukdaur that was amazing. I’d love to see if my memory holds true.

This is a fantastic show! I'm more a fan of mid 70s for my Jerry but took a chance on the guest appearance lighting a fire under Jerry and, once again, it did! This is a tight, energetic concert that isn't just loud but has a great beat and the sax really works here (I don't think they always mix well). I am trying to support the JG releases so they keep coming out with them, there have been some real great ones and frankly I am more psyched by the JGB than the GD stuff ... simply because we haven't dug very deep yet into the archive. Please keep it coming. Wish I'd gotten the art but it sold out while I counted pennies.
