The eighth installment in the GarciaLive series presents the Jerry Garcia Band's November 23rd, 1991 performance at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI. The Fall ’91 tour as a whole is widely regarded as one of Garcia’s finest and this particular Saturday evening serves as a further testament to the legend. Fans in attendance at the Bradley Center braved an intense snowstorm and the audience's palpable energy and enthusiasm was a likely catalyst for this spirited performance. Keyboardist Melvin Seals summarized the group nicely stating "That was the magic band. It’s not that the other scenarios didn’t work out but once we got to that level of the band with (drummer) Dave Kemper, John Kahn, Jerry, myself and the singers, Jackie (LaBranch) and Gloria (Jones) we all knew we had something special. That was
the band.”
And magic they made! As Dean Budnick notes in the release’s liner note essay, "If at times the Grateful Dead could be something of a turgid Russian novel: convoluted and labyrinthine yet mostly rewarding, the Jerry Garcia Band during this era was more of an Elizabethan sonnet: breezy, emotive and luminous.” The tone is set immediately with a melodious “Cats Under The Stars” opening the evening to the sheer delight of the crowd. Playful and buoyant versions of “Lay Down Sally”, “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox”, and “Deal”, along with an incendiary “Tangled Up In Blue” build into peak after peak. The marvelous evening is balanced by soul-soaked performances of “That Lucky Old Sun”, “My Sisters and Brothers” and a positively show-stopping take on The Manhattan’s “Shining Star” which showcases Jerry and the girls singing in beautiful harmony. As the Garcia Band graduated into arenas it could be expected that some of the intimacy might be lost, but on this cold, snowy evening in Milwaukee, they managed to make the Bradley Center feel cozy and warm.

This a great performance from the longest line of the many years of JGB. I was privileged to see a few shows on this tour and this is one of the best.

It’s Jerry! Don’t need to say more. I have several JGB live cds and they’re all great.

To my ears, this is the best GarciaLIve release for the early 90s JGB classic lineup. The sound quality and performances are top notch. Highly Recommended.

I remember the snow storm and how cold it was. I also remember what a heater of a show this was. Super cool to see this show now available.

I purchased Vol. 8. Bradley Center in late Nov, 1991. The band was uber tight that night and played so well. I have to toss out some props to Melvin Seals as this night was exceptional for him. Few surprises: Lay Down Sally, Ain't no Bread in the Bread Box, Shining Star (THE Highlight) and Bright side of the road. This concert is what I would describe as "HAPPY". All performers are locked in the pocket, musically. Gloria and Jacklyn (The "Jerryetts") nail each not with intonation and style of phrasing; a perfect example of icing on the cake. I have 4 of theses concerts (#2, 10,11 and 13) in addition to #8 . What a joy to remember earlier times when this stupid covid shit was not even thought of . I miss live concerts so much See you all down the road!

Seeing as my first ever Dead show was 2/4/78 at the Milwaukee Auditorium, hearing the release of this JGB show from the same city in the fall of 1991 is a treat. The band sounded in fine form and Jerry really did seem to have a joy in his voice. If memory serves, the JGB was supposed to hit Cincinnati at the Riverfront Coliseum on this fall tour (I had tickets on the floor about 20 or so rows back) but we received the earth-shattering news that the tour had been rerouted and skirted around our fair city. Yeah, whatever! This double CD only serves to reinforce what I thought we missed on the banks of the Ohio that fall. Thanks for the sweet memories!

Very nice recording of what must have been a fantastic concert. Musicianship, vocals, and sound are top-notch. I can listen to this 2-CD set over and over (and have)!! That Lucky Old Sun if my favorite cut...well, maybe The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down...or maybe Tangled Up in Blue...?? The whole set is superb and satisfying to the ear, heart, and soul. Highly recommended!

Thank you Mr. Garcia & Company, This would have been my first and only JGB show. Couple friends and I started from Northbrook up 294 for Milwaukee w/out tickets in hand. Snow was so bad on 294 (not a plow or salt truck in sight) we turned back at the Lake Forest Oasis. So glad it was the April 2019 special. I know I missed a great one, and wish I'd ever seen JGB. RIP Jerry. I was blessed to see you Friday & Sunday (last ever) at Soldier Field, among my 120ish Dead Shows from MI, IL, WI, CO, NV, CA. Red Rocks 1985 was an epic 3 day stand, and my 1st & 2nd were your last two at Uptown Theatre. JJE
