GarciaLive Volume 12: January 23rd, 1973 The Boarding House presents Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders’ complete and previously uncirculated performance at the storied downtown San Francisco venue. Mixed by Jonathan Wilson and Dave Cerminara from the original 16-track recordings captured by Betty Cantor and Rex Jackson.
Captured nearly two years after debuting their amorphous combo, GarciaLive Volume 12 finds Garcia and Saunders continuing to stretch the bounds of R&B standards and foundational rock & roll on the front-end of a three-night midweek run. The core of Garcia, Saunders, bassist John Kahn and drummer Bill Vitt are joined here by vocalist Sarah Fulcher whose tenure with the group was brief but revolutionary. Cut from the same cloth as her bandmates, Fulcher is a fearless improviser who could make up words and lead lines in the moment. On a rollicking version of Martha and the Vandellas’ “Honey Chile”, Fulcher showcases her abilities as a self-described “jam singer” leading, as Jesse Jarnow notes in the liner note essay, an "ebullient jam that turns the Motown bounce inside out and lands in a lithe descending pattern not dissimilar to what Dead tapers labeled the “Mind Left Body” theme.” Other highlights include a pair of Ray Charles staples “Lonely Avenue” and “Georgia On My Mind” which showcase the band’s ability to play it “straight.” Straight of course is relative with Garcia/Saunders & co extending these soul-soaked performances well beyond the 10 minute mark as only they can.

Well you know I was at this show. LOVED The Boarding House back then, perfect venue to get crazed and let it all hang out. Before the Jerry Garcia Band, this was just Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders. This gig was a game changer for me. So awesome. And what a great recording! Thank you!!!

100% pure Jerry & Merle sickness. Rhythms and jams totally unique and incredibly on point. Yeah some of her whooping and wailing gets to be a bit much at times.... but the inspired playing is an obvious result of her presence. So freakin' awesome to hear new Jerry release with such an array of different content. Anyone else pick up on the MyLeftBody jam in and out of tracks 3-4 on disc1??? Vol. 12- 1/23/73 is a must listen for any JGB fan... period!

Fabulous recordings by Betty and Rex of the band that "refused to rehearse"! The live improvisation was the keystone of the early days of what we in the Bay Area called "Jerry and Merl". The extra voice of Sara Fulcher only adds to the experiment!

This volume is OK. No offense to Sarah Fulcher, but her vocals do not work for in this context. Merl, Jerry and the band sound great on many tracks, but I have to deduct for her vocals. I love Donna Jean Godchaux and his other female backup singers, but Sarah Fulcher's lead vocals detract from a few cuts on this album. Its good, but I would recommend other volumes (Merl era) before this one.

I love these recordings. Jerry could be a flat out bluesman if he wanted, he excelled at that style too. The solos are all exquisite and poetic and overflowing with imagination, and sound especially lovely against the backdrop of Merl's silky smooth organ playing. It's a real treat hearing him do these songs, going to treasure owning this set.

Man Jerry was sure gettin down this night!!!! Pinch Harmonics galore!!!! I sure do love the tone of the Alligator Strat. The Band was on this night for sure. Sarah’s improv on the fly is impressive. We all know how the band could stretch it out then add Sarah to the mix and it becomes otherworldly. Love this show!!! Thanks and keep em coming please!!!!

What a jewel of a performance, especially considering the imprmptu arrangements as described in the notes!
