GarciaLive Volume 13 puts a spotlight on the Jerry Garcia Band’s legendary September ’89 run highlighting the September 16th show at Poplar Creek Music Theatre located in the suburbs of Chicago. Alongside the Jerry Garcia Band – John Kahn, David Kemper, Melvin Seals, Gloria Jones, and Jacklyn LaBranch – there is one BIG addition on saxophone… the Big Man, Clarence Clemons (Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band). While the setlist is fairly standard for the era, Clemons helps the band find new heights on old staples like The Band's “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence" and a pair of Garcia/Hunter originals, “Cats Under The Stars” and “They Love Each Other.” One relative rarity of note is a positively blistering take on The Rolling Stones’ romp “Let’s Spend The Night Together,” dusted off earlier in the year after having been absent since ’76, which closes set one spectacularly. Top to bottom, this one is filled with magic.

There are a few moments during 'After Midnight' that may be the most exhilarating music I've ever heard captured on a recording. The hairs on your neck will stand up and your mind will tour the universe - Why we got on the bus in the first place.

This is a great recording of a fantastic night at the now closed Poplar Creek Music Theater outside Chicago. Melvin Seals sound particularly great on this recording. Highly recommended!

I have always raved about this concert and how great Jerry sounded. And what an absolute treat and surprise Clarence was. The Big Man was unbelievable. I've listened to the cd repeatedly and am amazed and grateful again and again. Thank You.

The first thing that caught my eye was, Jerry and Clarence, I have loved Bruce and the E street band. I previously saw some you tubes video's of Jerry playing with Clarence. Jerry had a smile year to ear. Don't you just love when you see that.

These cats sound like they have been playing together for years... whew! The caliber of musianship really shows here, the ability of EVERYONE on stage the to read, feel, anticipate(?) where the next turn may be, just oozes throughout this show! Almost jazz fusion, really incredible!

This is an especially soulful show from beginning to end. Can't wait to feature it in on my radio show, The Dead Zone. It will be a highlight this August on the 2020 "Days In Between" monthlong celebration of JGB (The Dead Zone is on 88.7FM/WRHU.ORG/Radio Hofstra University, Sundays 6-8pmEST). Big thanks to Garcia Family Provisions for producing the GarciaLive Volume. Would be great if they remastered and released JGB 5/31/83 from the Roseland Ballroom, NYC!
