The Bonus CD featuring Jerry Garcia & John Kahn’s complete January 28th, 1986 set from The Ritz has sold out.
The GarciaLive series is set to return with our first dip into the acoustic realm! GarciaLive Volume 14: January 27th, 1986 The Ritz spotlights an exultant Jerry Garcia & John Kahn acoustic duo performance in the heart of New York City. There was always palpable energy to Garcia’s performances in the Big Apple and this Monday night was no exception. Captured at the mid-way point in their East Coast run, Garcia & Kahn delight a spellbound audience with a mix of Grateful Dead favorites, folk standard, and other staples from Garcia’s songbook. The duo’s performance is laid-back yet impassioned with Garcia’s mastery as a storyteller on full display. As Billy Strings describes in the liner notes, Garcia "sings through the verses and picks through the melodies as if he is the man in the story. Delicate and deliberate.” A sultry version of “Friend of the Devil” showcases Garcia’s soulful singing and his deep musical connection with Kahn. And what Garcia performance would be complete without a couple nods to the Bard — “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and “Simple Twist of Fate.” Other highlights include an upbeat “Bird Song” which Garcia & Kahn stretch out for the longest jam of the evening and a joyous “Ripple” we imagine made the whole room smile.

Great show, crystal clear. I saw the show 3 nights before in DC at DAR Constitution Hall, where I saw Jerry & John a couple times, once with Robert Hunter opening. Also saw JGB there a time or two. The acoustic shows were a real pleasure, to hear Ripple and the standards mostly not played since the 1980 Halloween run. I especially liked hearing Goodnight Irene, as it flashes me back to my parents. I imagine Jerry's family playing that song at home when he was a kid. My parents would sing it when I was a kid. Heard it played electric during the simulcast for NYE 1983, but not again by the Dead. From the NYC show, loved it all, but the Bird Song and Spike Driver Blues were my other favs.

Many thanks to the Garcia Family for releasing this first acoustic live performance in the series. Jerry and John Kahn are in great form for this 12 song set. I saw this duo a number of times and really appreciate this acoustic music. The electric sets are all great but it's nice to have some mellow tunes to enjoy. hope we get more examples of this artistry. Mine those archives and bring us more...

It is always a two sided sword when I open a new CD but this one hit harder then most. I was able to get tickets to a couple of Jerry's acoustic shows for my best friend and myself. The shows were great and The Bar was open at both. Good Scotch, Good tunes, and my best friend. On those nights we would live forever. Sadly Jerry left us far to soon. No more shows for us to enjoy. Oh there is still Good Scotch and my best friend to sit and listen to past shows, but knowing there will be no " The Next Show " still saddens me. " The Music Never Stopped " A fine CD!

An absolutely stellar show for release!! Garcia and Kahn are wonderful together and this show, along with the bonus cd if you had the chance to get it, truly reflect what this duo could do. Hearing Jerry sing Masterpiece with JGB was always a treat buy hearing him sing it during an acoustic evening is magic. Every chord hit, every lyric soulful and that's just one song. This release is highly recommended!!
