The Bonus CD featuring Jerry Garcia & John Kahn’s complete January 28th, 1986 set from The Ritz has sold out.
The GarciaLive series is set to return with our first dip into the acoustic realm! GarciaLive Volume 14: January 27th, 1986 The Ritz spotlights an exultant Jerry Garcia & John Kahn acoustic duo performance in the heart of New York City. There was always palpable energy to Garcia’s performances in the Big Apple and this Monday night was no exception. Captured at the mid-way point in their East Coast run, Garcia & Kahn delight a spellbound audience with a mix of Grateful Dead favorites, folk standard, and other staples from Garcia’s songbook. The duo’s performance is laid-back yet impassioned with Garcia’s mastery as a storyteller on full display. As Billy Strings describes in the liner notes, Garcia "sings through the verses and picks through the melodies as if he is the man in the story. Delicate and deliberate.” A sultry version of “Friend of the Devil” showcases Garcia’s soulful singing and his deep musical connection with Kahn. And what Garcia performance would be complete without a couple nods to the Bard — “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and “Simple Twist of Fate.” Other highlights include an upbeat “Bird Song” which Garcia & Kahn stretch out for the longest jam of the evening and a joyous “Ripple” we imagine made the whole room smile.

An absolutely stellar show for release!! Garcia and Kahn are wonderful together and this show, along with the bonus cd if you had the chance to get it, truly reflect what this duo could do. Hearing Jerry sing Masterpiece with JGB was always a treat buy hearing him sing it during an acoustic evening is magic. Every chord hit, every lyric soulful and that's just one song. This release is highly recommended!!

Great concert with his Buddy, John keeping the pace going. Jerry was struggling in those days and his voice tells the tale, yet his picking is ALWAYS Beautiful and he has that way to absorb into the story of a song like no other and help US ALL take mental journeys with him.

This one is an all-around treat that shows the roots of Jerry's "Almost Acoustic" shows with a larger band in 1988. 1986, the year that this show was played, was the year that Jerry's health degenerated to the point where he slipped into a diabetic coma after the summer tour. You can tell that his health isn't the best when the music starts as it is a little rough around the edges, but Jerry's stellar ability comes through right away as soon as he gets going. By the end of the first song both the vocals and the playing have smoothed out nicely (they aren't that bad to start with) and we get some of the tastiest versions of these songs that I have ever heard before. Jerry did many of these songs as part of the "Almost Acoustic" tour two years later, but the intricacy and skill of his playing during these shows is even better than it was in 1988. Anyone who like Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead will enjoy this show immensely.

What is so amazing, the clarity of this 30+ year recording. It is almost spiritual to hear the personal interaction between such close friends. The connectivity becomes so evident in this barren environment. It’s really amazing.

The shows are good, but short. I was 15 and saw the Philly show and very quickly got an AUD tape, played the hell out of it. The should have started out releasing 4/10/82 Capital Theater. That show was a rite of passage back in the day.

This is a real treat for fans of Jerry's acoustic performances! He and John Kahn played together for many years and it is evident that their collaborations were enjoyable to one another. They perform some Dead classics in their unique style, but also play some rarely heard Jerry solo songs and, of course, put their spin on standards such Good Night Irene. You won't be disappointed!
