GarciaLive Volume 20: June 18th, 1982 Cape Cod Coliseum presents the complete, previously unreleased Jerry Garcia Band performance in The Bay State’s vacationland – plus 45+ minutes of additional incendiary, uncirculated recordings captured on June 1st, 1981 at The Stone in San Francisco.
The early 80’s marked a transitional period for the Jerry Garcia Band. After beginning the decade with the lean & mean quartet showcased on After Midnight and GarciaLive Volume One, Garcia & John Kahn would go on to experiment with personnel configurations expanding the line-up considerably. By the time the Jerry Garcia Band rolled into the Cape Cod Coliseum co-headliners Bobby & the Midnites, the line-up included Grateful Dead bandmate Bill Kreutzmann (drums), Melvin Seals (organ), Jimmy Warren (electric piano) and Liz Stires & Julie Stafford (backing vocals). While the co-headline format limited each group to a single 90-minute set, Garcia’s 8-song set packed plenty of punch. The requisite “How Sweet It Is” opener wastes no time getting down to business with a galloping tempo punctuated by crisp solos from Garcia, Warren, & Seals. The relative rarity “Valerie,” marking its first appearance here on an archival release, and extended, show-stopping takes on “Dear Prudence” and “Don’t Let Go” follow to the crowd’s obvious delight. Other highlights from Cape Cod include a poignant take on Dylan’s “Simple Twist of Fate” and the freshly written “Run for the Roses.”

Great to get early 80s garcia in any format. His playin is exploratory and loose. Billy on drums a bonus. Simple twist has great solo from kahn and tangled up just shreds like a locomotive. More early 80s please.

Great release! Wasn't ready for organ and piano but it works nicely. Mississippi Moon is a treasured favorite of mine and so glad to see it here.

I have listened to this set (Garcia Live, v.20) a couple of times now and am really impressed with the quality of the music, sound, and energy. The band is tight and completely dialed in to the material. Jerry sounds great, and the song selection and sound are completely first-rate. If one is in doubt about purchasing this recording, I would encourage them to buy. It is definitely one of the better releases I have heard in the “Garcia Live” series.

Great shows. Especially interesting band line-ups with Kreutzmann and Weir. Always a surprise line up with Garcia shows. Loved the numbers. Keep them coming.

An excellent show! The sound quality along with the versions of the songs is absolutely fantastic! I have all 20 releases now and each of is like a shining gem. I can’t wait to see what number 21 will be.

I saw the GD play in Cape Cod both shows in October 1979 and loved the venue, the blue whale and the concert... Thanks to my Godparents Florence and Kenny for letting us crash at their Torrence house on the Cape.. I stopped buying JGB CDs a couple of years ago because they were very repetitious... When I saw this release I knew that I wanted it... I listened to the entire CD tonight and was very happy with the show.. Now I need to see all the JGB releases I passed on and figure out do I buy them all ... Probably... GRATE CD!!!!! Buy it you won't be disappointed

Outstanding !! I live in RI but I was getting married two days later and didn’t make it to the show. Valerie and Mississippi Moon are exceptional !! Great release and the t-shirt is one of the best yet !!

Was sold on the "Don't Let Go," which is a must must listen for fans of the space jazz jams. This one is particularly jamming. "Dear Prudence' was particularly poignant and vampy. And the "After Midnight" just absolutely shreds. I'm curious if there will ever be any releases of the Bobby and the Midnites shows from this era? He had a great line-up then and they were playing really well.

The T-shirt is a winner (among the best from any of the GARCIA line) and the music sublime. As good as the main show, I have to agree with Scott's assessment of the filler. The AFTER MIDNIGHT burns down the house. Anyone who thinks Jerry was more noodler than shredder needs to hear this one. Fire and lightning like nobody else. The whole band was a freight train barreling at 150 MPH on this one. And to get a DEAL>TANGLED closer? Enough said. Buy it.
