GarciaLive Volume 21 showcases the Jerry Garcia Bands February 13th, 1976 performance at the legendary Keystone in Berkeley, California. The nearly complete two-set performance was originally captured to 1/4" analog reels by Betty Cantor-Jackson.
Following the arrival of Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux in early 76, Garcia delighted in his groups harmonious sound emphatically expressing This is what I want to hear. While were sadly missing the show-opening How Sweet It Is, the selections that followed are sublime testaments affirming Garcias sentiments. Jimmy Cliffs The Harder They Come may encapsulate the dynamic range of the mid-70s era JGB better than any other with its soulful harmonies and adventurous improvisation taking the song well beyond its form before bringing it all back around.
The setlist boasts a few first known JGB performances: a breathtaking cover of the Rolling Stones Moonlight Mile, a steady grooving After Midnight, and a spirited Talkin Bout You. This collection however closes where we started, or rather should have started borrowing a bouncy performance of How Sweet It Is and adding one other first known performance of My Sisters and Brothers, both from February 15th, 76 at Sophies, for good measure.

Wow! The stuff that flies out of this band is totally awesome! The quality of the sound is superb! What a great historic record of a wonderful time in Garcia's music. His guitar playing and vocals are at it's best. A must have.

Another wonderful JGB performance! Really, really enjoyed this band's style, Keith and Donna sure to make a difference. Not sure how to choose a best song, just a great couple of shows with quite-acceptable sound. Keep 'em coming, thanks!

As my wife and I are getting ready to travel from O'ahu to Berkely for Rex Foundation celebration, the arrival of this CD brought tears of joy to my eyes with almosts every cut, bringing back the joy of seeing JGB in small venues. Sound quality is crystal clear. Donna and Keith at top of their games, and John Kann?.......you feel the bass in your chest. Catfish John ,Moonlight Mile,After Midnight, etc, what a 2 CD set! IMHO,having been on the bus since 1970,these 80s shows were the best times with the Dead community.

This era of the Jerry Garcia Band is slower, but still full of sweet, groovy energy that pulls me in and puts a big smile on my face.

It's always a treat to get a new release from the Jerry Band. Definitely a more mellow and laid-back approach on this one than say, 3-22-78 at Marin Vet's.(Vol. 4). Jerry's not ripping it up so much as adding tasty licks where needed and letting the jams come to him. It's always revealing to hear a Garcia Band take on some Dead favorites like, Mission in the Rain and They Love Each Other. Comparing Garcia's interpretations when he's on his own lets you appreciate what he adds to the Dead versions, as well as, how the songs change when the ensemble(GD) is in full effect. Hearing Donna harmonize in a more intimate setting was especially nice. Her vocal additions on songs like "My Sisters and My Brothers" are a real joy, like putting a little sugar in your tea... Thanks to the gang at Garcia Provisions. Keep 'em coming!! I'd love to see 5-20-89 SDSU, at some point. Cheers!

Love JGB and loved the Keystone Berkeley (wish it were still open). I got to see him there and it was intimate and wonderful. Great show, performance, recording and great setlist. Loved the filler from two nights later of 'My Sisters and Brothers'. Always a rockin' show when he plays 'They Love Each Other', and 'After Midnight'. Keep them coming from the late 1970's, Jerry was on during this period.

Been waiting for years to get a release with "Moonlite Mile" and it has finally come! Great show, Mission, Catfish etc..Love these releases and also how they cover different eras and ensembles of the band. Lastly great recording, crystal clear, don't hesitate on buying this one, you won't regret it!

This fills the prescription…song after song is ‘on’ from the first down beat…happy with this!!!

Exceptional recording of such a great JGB era - all the instruments can be heard crispy, the band is tight, and Jerry is in full flight. One of my faves of the Garcia Live series so far
